A chat with Matt Siggins, Run Talk Run Cardiff

Run Talk Run Cardiff Bay is led by the wonderful Matt Siggins who has very kindly shared his journey with us this week. We are sure that many of you will relate to Matt’s “reasons to run” and how RTR is just a very lovely extension of that.

Tell us a bit about your running and/or mental health journey so far.

I'm currently the RTR leader for Cardiff Bay - we've just started out as a running community but already starting to grow. I started running ('properly'!) about three years ago when I first moved to Cardiff. It's such a great city to run in as there's loads of different routes to choose from. Having first run at leisure, I signed up for a few parkruns and then my first ever 10k in 2018. A couple of years later and I've run my fair share of half marathons and completed my first marathon in 2019 too. The aim for me is to keep up the momentum and focus on my enjoyment over PB's, but if they come along too then great.

For me, running is a space for my head to get away from day-to-day life. I suffer with anxiety and find that running has been hugely helpful in combatting this. Having a consistent routine and ensuring I get out and run most days has such a positive impact on my mental health.

What brought you to Run Talk Run specifically?

A friend of mine set up a RTR in Hackney and having seen the positive message behind the community, I thought it was something we were missing in Cardiff. I like that it's a group where running is the facilitator for conversation, rather than focusing on PB's or times.

In what ways does running (and RTR!) help you?

Simply put, running is a release. It helps me focus on the important things whilst at the same time allowing me to have some headspace. I find that RTR also allows for community and conversation that might not be available to people who are usually solo runners.

What would you say to someone who was nervous about coming to a Run Talk Run?

Everyone is nervous the first time - I was! We are such a friendly bunch that you'll feel at home right away. We get it.
