The Characteristics of a Run Talk Runner

On Saturday 22nd January our Founder Jess Robson headed to Edinburgh with the primary intention of delivering the Run Talk Run journey to an audience of fundraisers at the Rabbie Burns Ball.

Along the way she also managed to meet with Michael (RTR Glasgow) and Ali (RTR Scotland Regional Leader and RTR Dundee Leader).

The ball itself was a beautiful affair, and raised an astonishing amount of money for SAMH. But in her talk, Jess highlighted some of the things she has learned from running with the RTR community over the last few years.

Run Talk Runners are incredibly resilient people, and these were the tips that Jess shared with the audience which might help other people build their resilience too…

SELF AWARENESS: Run Talk runners aren’t afraid to confront their emotions and be vulnerable enough to acknowledge that they might need some support. Self awareness is hard to achieve, but it can be impossible to improve your state of wellbeing without first acknowledging where you’re starting from.

PERSPECTIVE: Run Talk Runners are GREAT at giving themselves a sense of perspective. Given the nature of their preferred activity (Running!) they are able to create mental space between themselves and their problems. Sometimes space is all thats needed.

CONNECTION: Run Talk Runners understand the importance of connection and community. They know that seeking support is the sensible thing to do, and that they do not have to face their problems alone. They are prepared to go beyond surface level conversation to achieve that connection with their fellow runners.

SELF COMPASSION: Run Talk Runners have been forced, by mental ill health, to prioritise their wellbeing. This might sound selfish, but it’s their most selfless quality.

LAUGHTER: Run Talk Runners understand the role that laughter has to play in helping them recover from the heaviness of life. Indeed, to be a little silly on their runs is what makes them all the more enjoyable!

So…

Take what you need from the above characteristics of a Run Talk Runner. They truly are resilient.
